FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a sound bath?

A sound bath is a restorative immersion in sound - I like to think of it as ‘sound medicine’. We lie (or sit) and allow ourselves to be ‘bathed’ in the vibrations created by the instruments. The soundwaves can drop us into more meditative brain wave states where we may physically soften, releasing tension in the body and mind. Sound bathing may help improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance creativity and problem solving or allow us to access somewhere more esoteric where we may have dream-like visions or experiences.

What are crystal singing bowls?

Crystal singing bowls are instruments commonly used in sound baths alongside gongs, Tibetan bowls, chimes, harps, drums and more. Crystal singing bowls are my instruments of preference as I find them more gentle and soothing to the ear yet just as powerful (this is just my personal experience!) and I work specifically with Crystal Tones Alchemy bowls as for me they produce the most beautiful tones. Alchemy bowls are made from 99.99% quartz crystal and blended with other precious gems and minerals to provide specific energies to support us. Some of my alchemies include nurturing platinum, transformational ruby, inspiring gold and cleansing dead sea salt. I incorporate other instruments that mimic reassuring sounds of nature like soft waves, gentle rainfall and chirping birds. These sounds help regulate our nervous system as they indicate to the most primitive part that there is safety and abundance in our surrounding environment.

What do I wear?

Wear something comfortable that you feel you can properly relax in. Layers is always a good idea as whatever the temperature outside your body temperature can drop when lying or sitting still. Better to be a little too warm, than a little too cold. You may also wish to wear a woolly hat and I always recommend thick fluffy socks!

What do I bring?

You’ll need something comfortable to lie on like a yoga mat or camping mat and you may want something to support your neck/head like a small cushion or pillow. I always recommend bringing as many blankets as you can. The idea is for the body to feel as comfortable and supported as possible to aid relaxation. You may wish to bring water or cough sweets if you have a dry throat and an eye pillow or eye mask (although I have these to borrow). You may also wish to bring a notebook for journaling, or your own crystals (for charging in the vibrations), but this is completely optional.

What if I don’t like it?

As much as I advocate the magic of sound healing, sound baths may not be for everyone - for some of us just being in stillness may cause unease. If you’ve attended a sound bath before and not enjoyed it I always recommend trying another one as each sound bath can be such a unique experience. Some people don’t like gongs whilst some can’t get along with crystal bowls or sounds of water - we’re all different! If you’re worried about attending and finding it uncomfortable you can always situate yourself by the door so you can leave quietly. You may also want to stay seated or keep your eyes open - whatever you find supportive. You could also quietly take some gentle movement if lying still doesn’t suit. Please get in touch if you have any worries about attending.

s it suitable for me?

Sound bathing is suitable for most people in general good health but there is limited research out there on who it may not be suitable for. More studies need to be done before firm restrictions are put in place but I generally advise that it may not be for you if you have a pacemaker, severe mental health challenges or are in your first trimester of pregnancy. Please seek guidance from your medical practitioner if you have any concerns due to a health condition.
